Oral Health is a key part of overall health. When a child is not healthy, it affects their ability to learn, thrive and develop. Good oral health can contribute to school readiness and the prevention of school absence.
Tooth decay is the most common oral disease affecting children and young people in England and is largely preventative . A poor diet can lead to tooth decay, which in turn can impact on impaired nutrition and growth. Tooth decay may also result in pain and infection and can affect a child’s ability to sleep, eat, speak, play and socialise with other children.
Children accessing early years settings are encouraged to participate in daily supervised tooth brushing with family fluoride toothpaste.
- All children taking part in the programme will be provided with their own toothbrush and will brush their teeth with fluoride toothpaste once every day while they are at pre-school.
- All toothbrushes for the programme will be stored at the setting in a covered rack to keep them clean and will be replaced each term.
- Consent will be obtained from parents/carers before children’s toothbrushing continues.
Ulceby Pre-School will:
- Supervise all children whilst brushing their teeth.
- Attend necessary training which will be recorded and monitored.
Community Oral Health Promotion Team will:
- Monitor registered settings.
- Observe toothbrushing sessions.
- Hold regular telephone conversations in terms of support needs.
